Everyone's Playing September 25, 2006
"The best post-punk, New New Wave band we've heard in a long time. Super-fun, extremely danceable, totally tasty pop goodness." -- The Phillyist "Esque is onto something here. With infectious hooks and clever word-play, Everyone's Playing is as solid a start as any band could ask." -- Localist "Everyone's Playing possesses a power and maturity most new bands can only dream of." -- House of Smut "A dark and moody, far-too-short collection of ‘80s-influenced art rock. Hopefully Everyone’s Playing is just a taste of what’s to come." -- Memphis Playbook

New York duo Esque, singer/multi-instrumentalist Darren O'Brien and drummer Chase Anderson, can’t waste their time playing only one genre. Why not unite the pummeling rhythms of post-punk and goth, the blissful guitar and keyboard hooks of shoegaze and New Romanticism, and emotionally stirring songs that capture a sophisticated glam sensuality and the transcendental nostalgia of plaintive dream pop? And why not add elements of electro, soul, disco, jazz, funk, Krautrock, prog, and world music as adornments to this solid foundation? Since 2010, Esque have done this in the studio with coproducer Toshi Yano (Fiery Furnaces) and keyboard engineer Joe McGinty (Psychedelic Furs), and on stages with Crystal Castles, Health, Crocodiles, Suckers, the Acrylics, Free Blood, the Hundred In The Hands, Mirror Mirror, and more.
