Tonightmares

"The realization of what an art rock album can be. Esque get it right in every way, vocally, lyrically and musically.  One of the ten best albums of the year so far." -- Floorshime Zipper Boots

Double Blind

2010 12" maxi-single.

“Double Blind” is the first taste of the debut album by Brooklyn’s Esque, a dark and romantic, Moroder-meets-Simple Minds workout with a New Orleans second-line jazz twist on 12" vinyl with remixes from Free Blood, Omega Jarden, and Edie Sedgwick. It’s paired with “Singing In The Dark,” an impossibly spare, haunting verse that explodes into a huge, stargazing chorus.

"Listening to this reminds me of the nights I used to stay up late watching MTV’s 120 Minutes, and I love it." -- The Bomarr Blog

 Everyone's Playing

2006 debut EP.

"The best post-punk, New New Wave band we've heard in a long time. Super-fun, extremely danceable, totally tasty pop goodness." -- The Phillyist

"Esque is onto something here. With infectious hooks and clever word-play, Everyone's Playing is as solid a start as any band could ask." -- Localist

"Everyone's Playing possesses a power and maturity most new bands can only dream of." -- House of Smut

"A dark and moody, far-too-short collection of ‘80s-influenced art rock. Hopefully Everyone’s Playing is just a taste of what’s to come." -- Memphis Playbook

Everyone's Playing CD-EP

$ 4.99 USD

The lush, often paranoid concoction that Esque conjures is the brainchild of Memphians singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Darren O’Brien and drummer Chase Anderson. Their debut EP, Everyone’s Playing, self-released in September of 2006, was widely praised by Memphis and regional press.

After relocating to New York, the group began sharing the stage with the likes of Health and Crystal Castles, Suckers, the Acrylics, Free Blood, The Hundred in the Hands, Preacher & the Knife, Mirror Mirror, Omega Jarden, and more.

With a team of trusted collaborators, Esque continues to explore the reconciliation of disparities, where the pummeling rhythms of post-punk and goth meet the blissful guitar and keyboard hooks of shoegaze and New Romanticism, all in support of emotionally stirring songs that capture a sophisticated glam sensuality, as well as the transcendental nostalgia of plaintive dream pop. And this is just a jumping off point, a consistent thread around which weavings of techno and electro, soul, disco, jazz, funk, Krautrock, prog, world music, and more find a welcome home.
